2026 will be considered a turning point in the summer gaming showcase season, marking a pivot in the approach of one of history's most popular and beloved franchises, Square Enix. The publisher made a dual announcement that caught out all fans and industry analysts by surprise, and did a masterclass in giving the players what they wanted. At the same time, they gave a fantastic preview of the end of the Final Fantasy VII remake and broke down barriers of platform exclusivity.
The Journey's End: Final Fantasy VII Revelation
At Summer Game Fest.. the official reveal was of the last and most anticipated installment of the reimagined Final Fantasy trilogy: Final Fantasy VII Revelation. Revelation will be released in Spring 2027, immediately following the heart wrenching emotional cliffhanger of Rebirth. As the story unfolds, Cloud Strife and the rest of AVALANCHE head to the cold lands of the Northern Continent, where they will eventually face the final battle at the Northern Crater.
The thing that makes Revelation stand out is not only the narrative's resolution, but a sizeable scale upgrading that's decidedly more player driven. Fans will be able to pilot a iconic airship, the Highwind, in an open world without limits. In a series first, you can glide out of the moving airship directly into the ground without actually having to go through loading screens.
The Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear (FITS) system is also being put in place by Square Enix. Unique outfits that are reminiscent of a Final Fantasy character archetype such as Black Mage or Warrior are also available for characters to dynamically switch into to control their combat capabilities. In addition, popular characters Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind make full party characters.
The experience will be the culmination of all the stories and emotions that have been built up over the years, in the most satisfying way, as the series' final chapter, Naoki Hamaguchi, Director, said.
Shattering the Exclusivity Barrier
Revelation was a show stopper, but Square Enix was equally explosive with the business move that ended the trilogy's single platform exclusivity.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is officially coming to Xbox Series X/S and the much anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. An overhaul of the company's approach from releasing titles on a single platform to a multi platform strategy, the publisher said that gamers on Xbox and Nintendo's new consoles can get in on both Remake and Rebirth immediately to follow the action.
Better still, Final Fantasy VII Revelation will forgo the exclusive to time idea altogether. It is expected to be released simultaneously day and date in PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store in Spring 2027. With its most ambitious project, Square Enix guarantees that, at the end of Cloud's journey, the entire gaming community can be part of it.
