Game Pass Is Now Inside Discord — and Ultimate Got Cheaper, Not Pricier

Discord Nitro now bundles Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition at no extra cost: 50+ games, 10 hours of cloud gaming, same $9.99. And contrary to how it was widely reported, Game Pass Ultimate was cut to $22.99 from $29.99 — funded by pushing Call of Duty off day one.

Bar chart of monthly Xbox entry prices: Discord Nitro $9.99 including Game Pass Starter, Game Pass Ultimate $22.99 after the April cut, $29.99 before it.

On May 11, 2026 — Discord Nitro's tenth anniversary — Discord announced Nitro Rewards, and the headline item was Microsoft's: Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition, bundled into Nitro at no extra cost.

Nitro stays $9.99 a month. As Discord's senior product lead put it: "Your Nitro membership is still the same price, and Game Pass is now part of it."

That is the part worth sitting with. Microsoft did not launch a new subscription. It put a tier of Game Pass inside somebody else's product.

What Starter Edition actually includes

The bundled tier is deliberately modest:

  • 50+ PC and console games — around 56 at launch, with the catalogue expected to grow
  • 10 hours of Xbox Cloud Gaming per month
  • Available across 11 countries at launch, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, France, Germany, India, Mexico and South Korea

The confirmed launch titles are a sensible mix of recognisable names rather than a dumping ground: Stardew Valley, Hades, Grounded, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, Fable, DayZ, Cities: Skylines, Dishonored 2, Gears of War 5 and DOOM Eternal.

The ten-hour cloud allowance is the tell. It is enough to genuinely try cloud gaming and not enough to replace Ultimate's unlimited streaming — a sampling tier by design, not an accident of generosity.

Nitro Rewards bundles more than games, too: hardware discounts of up to 30% on Logitech G, 15% on SteelSeries and 20% on KontrolFreek, plus 250 Orbs a month for subscribers and an Orbs multiplier on Quests.

Discord becomes a distribution layer

The technically interesting piece is the Play button now living inside Discord.

If a friend is streaming a Game Pass title, you can launch that same game — via Xbox Cloud Gaming or locally on PC — without leaving the conversation. No storefront, no search, no separate download step.

That collapses the distance between watching a game and playing it to roughly one click, and it is a genuinely different distribution model from a storefront. Discord stops being the place where you talk about games and becomes the place where games start.

Microsoft is betting that friction between discovery and play is the thing costing it players, not catalogue size or hardware.

The correction: Game Pass Ultimate got cheaper, not pricier

This is where earlier coverage — including our own first version of this piece — got it backwards, so it is worth stating plainly.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate did not rise to $22.99. It was cut to $22.99, down from $29.99 — a $7 per month reduction, and the first significant move by new Xbox gaming CEO Asha Sharma, who had acknowledged in a leaked internal memo that Game Pass had become too expensive.

The direction matters enormously. A price increase alongside a cheap Discord tier would read as Microsoft squeezing its committed subscribers while fishing for new ones. A price cut alongside a cheap Discord tier is a coherent strategy: make the premium tier more defensible and simultaneously build a much wider on-ramp.

There is a catch, and it is a real one. New Call of Duty releases no longer arrive on Game Pass at launch — they join the service roughly 12 months later. Microsoft funded part of the price cut by removing the single biggest day-one draw the service had.

Whether that trade is good depends entirely on whether you subscribed for Call of Duty.

Starter versus Ultimate, plainly

Price. Starter is included in Nitro's $9.99/month. Ultimate is $22.99/month standalone.

Library. Starter offers 50-odd curated titles chosen for stability in a low-bandwidth cloud environment. Ultimate carries the full rotating catalogue, several hundred strong.

Cloud gaming. Starter gets 10 hours a month. Ultimate is unlimited — the clearest single reason to pay the difference if you stream across devices.

New releases. Starter leans on established back-catalogue games. Ultimate still carries most day-one releases, with the Call of Duty carve-out noted above.

Extras. Starter's advantage is the Discord integration itself. Ultimate bundles EA Play and the broader perks programme.

The Asha Sharma direction is getting legible

Put the moves together — a $7 price cut, a Call of Duty concession to fund it, and a free tier embedded in a social platform — and a strategy comes into focus.

Microsoft is building a ladder rather than a wall:

  • A socially-integrated, effectively free entry point for casual players
  • A cheaper, more defensible premium tier for committed subscribers
  • Cloud access that requires no dedicated hardware at any rung

Notice what is absent from that ladder: a console. Not one of those steps requires buying an Xbox.

That is consistent with everything else Microsoft has done this year, from shipping Halo on PlayStation to putting the best-reviewed game of 2026 into Game Pass on day one. It is also happening against a backdrop where Microsoft raised Xbox Series X hardware pricing by $150, blaming memory and storage costs.

Hardware gets more expensive and harder to justify. Services get cheaper and easier to reach. The company is not being subtle about which side it is investing in.

The bigger question

Embedding Game Pass into Discord tests a future where a gaming platform behaves like a connected service rather than a walled hardware ecosystem.

The console still exists. But in this strategy Discord is no longer a communication app that gamers happen to use — it becomes a discovery surface, a storefront and a streaming client at once, and Microsoft does not have to own it to benefit from it.

The open question is what happens when the on-ramp works. If a meaningful share of those Nitro subscribers convert to Ultimate, this is the cheapest customer acquisition Microsoft has ever run. If they simply enjoy ten hours of cloud gaming a month forever, Microsoft has spent real catalogue value subsidising someone else's subscription product.
