GTA 6 Is About 210 GB. Here Is What That Means for Your Console

GTA 6 is reported to be about 210 GB on PS5 — roughly a third of an original PS5's usable space, and more than half of an Xbox Series S's. Rockstar has not confirmed the size yet. What it has confirmed is the part that makes it matter: preload opens November 12, the game unlocks November 19, and the boxed edition contains a download code, not a disc. Everyone downloads it, so everyone needs the space.
Here is what 210 GB means on each console, how long it takes to download on your connection, and what to clear before preload opens.
How big is GTA 6?
The 210 GB figure comes from the PlayStation Game Size account, which posted it on October 27 alongside the game's pricing and preload details. Several outlets have reported it since, but as of October 30 neither Rockstar nor Sony has published an official file size, and no Xbox size has appeared at all.
So treat 210 GB as the best number available, not a final one. Development builds and store listings change in the last weeks before launch, and a day-one patch — if there is one — comes on top. We will update this page when Rockstar or the stores publish the real figure.
Will GTA 6 fit on my console?
Almost certainly, if you clear space. The question is how much is left afterwards. Using each console's real usable storage — what is free on a new machine, not the number on the box:
| Console | Usable storage | GTA 6 takes | Left after GTA 6 |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 (original) | 667 GB | 31% | 457 GB |
| PS5 Slim | 848 GB | 25% | 638 GB |
| Xbox Series X | 802 GB | 26% | 592 GB |
| Xbox Series S | 364 GB | 58% | 154 GB |
The Xbox rows assume a similar size to PS5, which is usual for big releases but not yet confirmed. The PS5 Pro, with roughly 1.9 TB usable, is the one console where GTA 6 is a small slice — about 11%.
The Series S is the tight one. After GTA 6, it has room for roughly one more big modern game. We go through why consoles lose 15–29% of their storage before you install anything, and how many games fit on each, in our console storage breakdown.
How much space should I clear?
Aim for about 250 GB free before November 12. That covers the reported 210 GB plus room for a day-one patch and the working space consoles use while installing and updating. If the official size comes in lower, you have spare room; if it comes in higher, you are not scrambling on launch night.
If you are short, the quickest wins are usually one or two large games you have finished — a single big shooter can be 100 GB or more on its own. On both consoles you can move games to a USB drive instead of deleting them, which is faster than downloading them again later. Current-gen games have to be moved back to internal storage to play, but as parking space it works.
How long will GTA 6 take to download?
At 210 GB, here is the best case — your plan running at full speed with nothing else in the way:
| Your internet plan | Best-case download time |
|---|---|
| 25 Mbps | 18 h 40 min |
| 50 Mbps | 9 h 20 min |
| 100 Mbps | 4 h 40 min |
| 300 Mbps | 1 h 33 min |
| 500 Mbps | 56 min |
| 1 Gbps | 28 min |
Real downloads run slower, especially over Wi-Fi and especially on the busiest launch in years. Remember that your console shows speed in megabytes, not the megabits your plan is sold in — divide your plan by 8 to know what to expect. Our download-speed guide explains why, and what to check if it is genuinely slow.
The important number is not any single row. It is that preload gives you seven days. Even on a 25 Mbps line, 210 GB fits comfortably inside that window. The people who will not be playing at launch are the ones who wait until November 19 and download alongside everyone else.
The physical edition still needs a download
This is the detail most people will miss. Rockstar's announcement describes the physical edition as a download code in the box, available from November 12 "to support pre-loading." There is no disc to install from.
That means a boxed copy does not save you the download, the storage or the bandwidth — it is a code you redeem like any digital purchase. If you were planning to buy physical because your internet is slow, plan for the download anyway, and redeem the code on November 12 so the preload starts immediately. (The Series S has no disc drive regardless, so for its owners nothing changes.)
If you have a data cap
At 210 GB, GTA 6 is a large slice of a monthly allowance: about 21% of a 1 TB cap, before any patches or the rest of the household's use that month. If your provider caps data, check how much you have left before November 12, and avoid deleting other games you will want back later — every re-download comes out of the same allowance.
What we still do not know
- The official file size, on either platform.
- The Xbox Series X|S size.
- The exact time preload unlocks on November 12 in your region.
- Whether there is a day-one patch, and how large.
We will update this page as each one is confirmed. GTA 6's release-window ripple effects and the case for waiting for the PC version are covered separately.
The short version
- GTA 6 is reported at about 210 GB on PS5. Not confirmed by Rockstar or Sony yet; no Xbox size published.
- Preload opens November 12; the game unlocks November 19. The boxed edition is a download code, not a disc — everyone downloads.
- It takes 31% of an original PS5, about a quarter of a PS5 Slim or Series X, and 58% of a Series S.
- Clear about 250 GB before November 12 to leave room for a patch.
- At 100 Mbps the download takes about 4 h 40 min at best — so preload early, not on launch night.
- Data cap? 210 GB is about a fifth of a 1 TB monthly allowance.
