GTA 6 on PC: Wait, or Buy It on Console? Rockstar's Own Record Answers It
GTA 6 launches on 19 November with no PC version announced. Rockstar has made PC players wait between 7 and 19 months before, which puts a PC release somewhere from mid-2027 to mid-2028 — later than the rumour. And if you buy on console, the PS5 Pro may look best without playing any better.

GTA 6 arrives on 19 November on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It does not arrive on PC, and Rockstar has not said when it will.
That leaves a lot of people holding the same question four weeks out: buy it on console now, or wait? The honest answer depends on a number almost nobody quotes accurately — how long Rockstar has actually made PC players wait before — and on one technical detail about the consoles that changes what "the best version" means at launch.
Should you wait for the PC version?
Only if you are comfortable waiting until at least mid-2027, and more likely late 2027 or 2028.
There is no announced PC version. Take-Two's Strauss Zelnick said in May that Rockstar starts on console to serve its core audience first, and did not commit to a PC date. A widely repeated report puts PC in early 2027; it is unconfirmed, and as the chart above shows, it would be faster than any Rockstar release in nearly two decades.
Here is the actual record, first console release to first PC release:
- GTA IV — 29 April 2008 to 2 December 2008. 7.1 months.
- Red Dead Redemption 2 — 26 October 2018 to 5 November 2019. 12.3 months.
- GTA V — 17 September 2013 to 14 April 2015. 18.9 months, and that was with a full console re-release in between.
Apply the same gaps to 19 November 2026 and you get June 2027, November 2027, or June 2028. None of those is a forecast — Rockstar is under no obligation to repeat itself — but they are the only evidence there is, and every one of them is later than the rumour.
If GTA 6 is the reason you play games this year, waiting means sitting out the launch, the spoilers, the first year of GTA Online's successor and every conversation about it. Most people should not wait.
If you buy on console, which one?
This is where the launch details matter, and where the expensive answer is not automatically the right one.
Every console runs at 30fps for now. Following Rockstar's extended look at the game, Rockstar's line on a 60fps option was that it had nothing to share yet — the consoles are running at 30, and a performance mode is neither confirmed nor ruled out. Treat any article promising 60fps at launch as speculation until Rockstar says otherwise.
The PS5 Pro does not obviously fix that. The Pro's upgrade is overwhelmingly on the GPU side; its CPU is close to the base PS5's. A dense open world full of simulated traffic, pedestrians and physics leans hard on the CPU, and if the CPU is what holds a game to 30, a stronger GPU buys sharper image quality rather than more frames. That is the same distinction we walked through in why the same PC can be CPU-bound at one resolution and GPU-bound at another — the faster component only helps if it is the one in the way.
So the Pro will very likely be the best-looking console version. Whether it is a meaningfully better-playing one depends on a performance mode nobody has confirmed. If you already own a base PS5, GTA 6 alone is not a reason to upgrade until that question is answered. And even with patches, PSSR's track record is uneven enough that a Pro advantage is not a given — in at least one recent game the Pro finished behind the Series X.
PS5 or Series X — choose on the console you already own, the friends you play with, and whether you want Game Pass for everything else. There is no evidence of a meaningful gap between them for this game.
Series S is the version to be cautious about. It is the weakest of the supported machines, and reporting so far suggests it is the one most likely to stay locked at 30 even if the others gain a performance option. It will run the game; it will not be the showcase.
What it costs either way
The standard edition is $79.99 — and it is not a new industry price. Take-Two put NBA 2K27 at $70 the same year, and called $80 a title-specific decision.
The wait-for-PC case is often made on price, on the theory that the PC version will be cheaper or discounted. Rockstar's history does not support that either: GTA V and RDR2 both launched on PC at full price, a year or more later, and stayed close to it for a long time. Waiting saves you nothing up front. What it buys you is the version with higher frame rates, mods, and eventually ultrawide and high-refresh support — which is a real prize, but a later one.
The date itself
19 November is holding, and the usual argument for another delay is weaker than it sounds. It also explains why so much of the autumn release calendar moved out of its way into early 2027 — publishers are not betting on a slip.
So, what should you do?
- You only play on PC, and GTA 6 is not urgent for you: wait, but plan on late 2027 rather than early. The rumour is the outlier, not the expectation.
- You want to play it this year and own a PS5 or Series X: buy it on what you have. Don't upgrade hardware for it until Rockstar confirms whether there is a performance mode.
- You are deciding between a base PS5 and a Pro for this game specifically: the Pro will look better; it is not yet known to play better. If the price gap matters to you, the base console is the safe call.
- You own a Series S: it will be the most compromised version. Fine for playing the story; not the one to judge the game by.
The short version
- GTA 6 launches 19 November on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no announced PC version.
- Rockstar's own record is 7 to 19 months from console to PC. Applied to GTA 6, that is June 2027 to June 2028. The rumoured early-2027 window would be faster than any of them.
- All consoles run at 30fps for now, with no confirmed performance mode.
- The PS5 Pro will likely look best but may not play better, because its CPU barely changed and a CPU-heavy open world is where 30fps limits usually come from.
- Waiting for PC saves no money. Rockstar's PC releases arrived at full price. What waiting buys is frame rate and mods, a year or more later.
