Can King Art Games Save the Grimdark RTS? Why Dawn of War IV is the Redemption Story We Need

This week, Real Time Strategy enthusiasts collective sigh of relief was heard across the galaxy. At the Warhammer Skulls 2026 showcase.. both Deep Silver and developer King Art Games did the unspeakable and officially announced Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV will be released on 17 September 2026.

The prolific Dawn of War series has been Warped for almost a decade. Following the attempt to blend the traditional RTS gameplay with MOBA style heroes in Dawn of War III in 2017 which angered longtime fans, many were sure the series was over.

War is coming back to Kronus. Under the new developer and with an eye for the franchise's history, Dawn of War IV promises to be the comeback tale the grimdark universe sorely needed.

Back to the Roots: Base Building and Brutal Scale

When Dawn of War IV hits the market, it will offer a huge collection of more than 70 campaign missions to be played solo or all the way in co-op. Authored by the legendary Black Library author John French, the tale is set 200 years after Dark Crusade, and follows the Blood Ravens as they come back to Kronus to restore their broken Chapter.

At the time of release, the game has four playable factions with different sub leaders (such as the Space Marines with a choice between Blood Ravens or Dark Angels)...

The Space Marines: The heavily armoured, elite forces of the Imperium.

The Orks: The untamed, constantly flowing green wave of raw aggression.

The Necrons: Rising from their Tomb Worlds to claim the Galaxy.

The Adeptus Mechanicus: For the first time in the series' history, the cybernetic, techno religious cult forces of the Adeptus Mechanicus have gone to war. Using AI Text?

A Content Roadmap That Respects the Fans

King Art Games did not simply state a release date and they released a very clear Year One Roadmap that they are dedicated to long term support.

Launch (September 17th 2026)

The base game includes the full 70 mission campaign, plus a fully updated version of last stand co-op, and classic Skirmish.

Fall 2026 Update

This first free update brings Crusade Mode. It features a turn based strategy world map inspired by the popular Dark Crusade expansion in which you attack a planet's territory one by one, and a completely new multiplayer map pack.

Winter 2026 Update

The Blood Ravens Story Prologue DLC unlocks new story missions, as well as the official Mission Editor for the community to use.

Spring 2027 Expansion

With the first jump in premium comes a completely different 5th playable faction, and the dedicated story campaign.
